About Me

As a designer my passions for history, literature, theatre, and film have inspired me to take a unique approach to my design work. Every play, movie, or book brings forth a new flow of ambition, creativity, and drive. My name is Catherine Worsey and I am a conceptual Designer specializing in costume design and construction. I was born and raised in Southern California. It took a while to find where my passions truly lie after much self introspection and reflection. No one figures out their own life at the age of seventeen and I was no exception. I always knew that working in a creative field was where I would be most fulfilled in the workplace but I was unsure if I would be able to reach that potential. I have taken to working with countless different media including sculpture, painting, sketching, sewing, and writing. There is never enough creativity in one's life I think.

Every artist has a story about how they came to realize the exact point in time that they wanted to be in an artistic field. Even early in my life I was a very artistic child that would always start personal project after personal project. It started with my love of animation as I grew up watching all the Disney cartoons of the 90's along with the influences of the up and coming tech industry. The gaming world in particular, PC titles such as MYST and Tomb Raider, were just the very beginning. As I went through my time in high school this determination of wanting to be a successful entrepreneurial artist never wavered. That path for me changed in my Junior year to move to a more theatrical field. The one thing that I was always unsure of was the process of concept to application. I was able to put my ideas on paper but I wanted more. I wanted something that I would be able to touch and feel, something tangible. In writing it was about bringing characters to life with the written word. In sculpture it was 3D forms from a flat sketch. In costumes it was about the fabric, the original sketch, the trims, and the art of sewing. It was something I never thought I would pursue. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a creation in a physical and tactile form.

In response to this new career choice I attended North Carolina School of the Arts, an astounding theatrical technical school, where I was accepted into their Design and Production school on spot. While there I learned not only skills within my major but other D & P majors. We rotated through costumes, lighting, and scenery to see how a theater production's parts all work together to put on a smooth production. My time at UNCSA was pivotal in my success for my education at the Los Angeles campus at the Fashion Design Institute for Design and Merchandising {FIDM}. There I became a fashion major and attained my Associate of Arts Degree as well as graduated cum laude. The journey has been long and one filled with change and will continue to do so.

As I continued with my costume work for conventions I heard the same response over and over. A response that shocked me and an explanation as to why I have decided to become a part of this world. I was told that I should try my hand at molding, specifically that of the costumed variety.

Experience

As I continued with my costume work for conventions I heard the same response over and over. A response that shocked me and an explanation as to why I have decided to become a part of this world. I was told that I should try my hand at molding, specifically that of the costumed variety. Since then I have scheduled my own photoshoots in a effort to showcase my work. I have not been doing something like this for very long, however, every time I step onto the con floor I am constantly stopped for photos. I have to take that as a sign to continue to schedule more shoots and work to better myself within the cosplay community.
